Our collective reflects the diverse population of Hawaiʻi. We Are:

  1. Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) “The CPM is the only midwifery credential that requires knowledge about and experience in out-of-hospital settings. Their education and clinical training focuses on providing midwifery model care in homes and free standing birth centers.”

  2. Traditional Midwives “are midwives who-for religious, personal, and philosophical reasons-choose not to become certified or licensed. They believe that they are ultimately accountable to the communities they serve; or that midwifery is a social contract between the midwife and client/patient, and should not be legislated at all; or that women have a right to choose qualified care providers regardless of their legal status.”

  3. Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) “Certified Nurse-Midwives are trained in both nursing and midwifery. Their training is hospital-based, and the vast majority of CNMs practice in clinics and hospitals.”

  4. Certified Midwives (CM) "According to the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) 'CMs differ from Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs) only in that they are not also licensed as nurses. CMs and CNMs meet the same core competencies, sit for the same board exam, and have identical scopes of practice including prescriptive privileges.'

  5. Midwifery Students of various training backgrounds including direct apprenticeship and college education learning.

  6. Community Members and Organizations that support the preservation of the Midwifery Model of Care and the recognize the benefits of diversity to support families birthing the next generations.
